Yesterday I met the lovely brothers behind the miniatures agnostic wargame WARSURGE at the Melbourne Gaming Show (MEGA) – Kensington Town Hall – and purchased a copy of the official rulebook.
If you would like to learn more here’s a little explainer I prepared earlier.
A father and his girls go to war
This morning my daughters and I built little LEGO ships.
The app is the best
I’m impressed with how easy it is to generate new unit and weapon profiles in the official app which is free. A paid subscription unlocks additional features like QR codes for list sharing.
To add more flavour to your units you can add perks, too. With this in mind, everything has a points cost for balance purposes.
Alice went with the perk ‘Cover I’ which wasn’t effective in this match due to the high-powered firepower on the table however ‘Curse Move’ was a reliable and annoying disruptor.
I dabbled with ‘Airborne’ hoping to bypass the terrain to nestle into position.
Sophie had the most expensive loadout which made sense because ‘Healer I’ allowed her to gain a hit point each round. That was useful (until it wasn’t).
After lunch (toasted cheese and ham sandwiches) we set a 3x3 playing area, placed the LEGO terrain and prepared for our first game of WARSURGE.
I am the Turn Master [and you will obey me]
A roll-off determined I would be the Turn Master followed by Alice and Sophie.
Deployment
To keep it simple we chose corners.
Move, attack, dash, repeat
We found the game really easy to pick up (and I haven’t even read the rulebook cover-to-cover yet).
After a heated skirmish of everyone blazing each other with cat laser eyes, Sophie decided to lock me into close combat. When we realised you can still shoot at units ‘locked in melee’ etc. that just intensified the fighting.
It was actually a close match and it ended with Alice still standing.
I thoroughly enjoy the alternating activations between each phase of a round. For instance, I move a unit, Alice moves and then Sophie moves. It means everyone is invested at every step of the game and you’re not waiting a long period of time before you can do something.
After years of playing 40K, though, there were some interactions I found to be confusing (like being able to shoot at a unit locked in melee).
Fortunately, the official Discord server are quick to respond to questions. Such a welcoming community of gamers over there.
But, yes, I should RTFM.
I’m looking forward to playing more WARSURGE!
What’s happening?
Due to popular demand (a comment on the Mini Myths Discord server), I have created a page dedicated to upcoming events.
