On Saturday 5 April at Guf Werribee a group of high quar-lity players indulged in three rounds of This Quar’s War (300 points). This is their story.

Right on the border intersecting Maer Braech, Coftyr and Western Anyara lies the sleepy town of Gufton. You could say it has a certain Je nais se quar.
Unfortunately, Gufton has been shaken violently awake by Crusader forces directing raids into Coftyr. Similar such raids have been reported all along the border. We fear this may be the beginning of something much, much bigger …
The previously untouched town may have just become the focus of a new invasion.
The King expects all gentle-quar to work the defences and repel the invaders, while the Crusaders hope to start the final push that will finally bring about Alykinder’s dream of a united Alwyd!
Letters from the frontlines
Never trust a Gufton postal worker when it comes to privacy. Here are several intercepted messages – some of which the King found either very amusing or slightly alarming.
A note signed by the Second Gwyntish Auxiliary Regiment: We successfully defended Fort Cooke and went to the Weary-Bee to celebrate with our last drinks. The Crusaders ambushed us in our party and we were unprepared, though, and they took us down. In Quar-ish fashion they did not want to kill us – so in an ironic twist of fate they took the drinkers and put them in the drink. We washed up at Hooper's Crossing where some Toulmorans were holed up, and we fought a long and drawn-out battle. There were so many sixes on our tend the wounded rolls. It was a good tubthumping.
The moth cake box was damaged in transit and the only return-to-sender detail visible was 'Juan'. After a mail sorter finished the treats they found a folded letter among the crumbs: My Crusaders started off deep in the trenches and managed to get our Quar across to the other side. We reached Fort Cooke but were massacred by the staunch defenders and their sharpshooters! Our trench raiders managed to penetrate into the enemy fort but we’ve not heard from them since! Finally lady pluck and luck were on our side and managed to catch some Anyaran mercenaries by surprise at the Weary-Bee! Unfortunately, it looks like the Gwynt troopers drank the place dry.
This piece of paper was wrapped around a dud mortar shell: The Toulmore elite drove the Coftryan filth from the Weary-Bee and Gufton only to be ambushed by Gwynt on the banks of Hoopers Crossing. We call for more tariffs on Coftyr moths.
As the battlefield is scoured by remnant forces, more letters may emerge.
Another document of interest was also collected by the King’s officials.

1. Back to the trenches
Inevitably the fight reaches an impasse, deep trenches have been dug by both sides and it is very difficult to take and hold any ground.
But today, today is the day! Audacity will win in the end!
And so it came to pass that the plucky Royalists of Nod would meet the enemy head-on during a hasty patrol through the labyrinthine trenchworks.
The King needed His gentle-quar to reinforce Gufton’s defences, and the quickest route to town was via the dugouts and ditches.

The Cofytrans pushed forward with many falling in battle (with that hilarious heavy result). A rhyfler and the leading Is-Caertan reached the other side.
However, those Crusaders, and their sneaky trench raiders who infiltrated behind my lines, seized control of the network.
While the battle was lost, there was still a war to win …
2. The fight for Gufton
We’re in the thick of it now. The quiet town is at the centre of all the drama.
Mostly known for its production of greeting cards, with unique art and produced in limited numbers. Most of these cards have become quiet collectable and often go for a pretty penny. So much so that it is quite a valuable resource.
No wonder the Crusaders want to take hold of it!
Will the Royalists hold on to the town or will it fall to the Crusader?
The Is-Caertan of Nod rallied a detachment of Coftyr-aligned rhyflers to counter-attack the Toulmore warband looting all the greeting cards.

The Royalists sprang to action, bringing their harlechs to bear, ready to reclaim those precious greeting cards.
However, they were completely outclassed by the Toulmore’s artillery and urban warfare doctrines.
The King’s gentle-quar were blown to smithereens and shredded by the might of the Crusaders.
A lone, wounded sniper of mine that kept taking overwatch orders proved to be a nuisance to the enemy but it wasn’t enough to hold the town.
My Is-Caertan’s last memory before succumbing to unconsciousness was seeing a proud standard bearer plant their flag ever so close.
3. Fort Cooke
A small scouting force may simply choose to bypass this fort on their way to Gufton.
However, the fort remains a vital strategic position, and a real threat to a much larger invasion force.
For this reason the Crusader Sirnol is demanding that the fort be taken, no matter the cost!
Groggy, recovering from his wounds at Gufton, the Is-Caertan of Nod was surprised to find himself being field-promoted to the rank of Fort Cooke Commander.
There was no time for respite, however, as hostile forces were gathering on the outskirts to press yet another attack.

Absolutely brutal.
Rocket-propelled grenades pummelled the palisade walls, pushing rhyflers out of position, while concentrated small-arms fire from the ground shook the Royalists.
The oncoming storm of close combat was inevitable and terrifying considering the enemy’s group activations and clever use of ‘prone’ which made for effective, tactical advances to close the distance.
They finally jumped the fence and then the real assault commenced.

A Royalist rhyfler shot himself in the face and promptly stood up again. That was hilarious considering he could’ve charged instead.
The slaughter on that wall should’ve been ‘advantage Crusader’ however what transpired was a series of fortunate reactions (fortunate for me at least) where the bodies piled up.
The Is-Caertan of Nod, distracted by a quaint greeting card, could not believe his luck as his fellow Coftyrans successfully defended Fort Cooke from disciplined and steadfast attackers.
An incredible match that honestly could’ve swung either way!

Dex contributed to the Crusader war effort.

Round 1: Fort Cooke
The Commander yelled "first Quar over the walls gets 20 worms" before the squad was evaporated by scattergun fire.
The entire squad (the force) sustained major casualties losing 60% of their number due to scattergun fire, while the rest (only 6) were even fit enough to see to be POW by the end of the match.
Fort Cooke was the first of many attempts to crack its walls, doing so would deny the town of Gufton relief from occupation by its garrison, however this platoon failed to capture it. And lost half its number.
Upon tasking significant losses, the platoon reorganised and replenished whatever they could and combined resources from the remaining armaments and left over Quar and recruited Quar to create another squad
Round 2: Pushed into the trenches
Exploiting a gap in the regional countryside, the crusade launched various probing attacks into the trenches outside the town borders of Gufton, the remaining squad made out of the remaining platoon and conscripted Quar had pushed into the Coftyr trenchline.
The Quar of the platoon lined up to the other side of the trench, whistles were blown as a trench charge was declared and many tried to cross into no man’s land under light fire, exploiting a shift change in Coftyr forces, as many stayed back to defend the trench instead of the line.
Motorbikes that were not choked with mud joined the Coftyr defence to retake their lost trench and territory, ramping over gaps between trenches as best as they could, successfully reaching into the crusader back line to try and throw grenades
As the trench charge became more severe, many crusaders joined which lead the Coftyr to charge also, and the squads began brutally fighting with fists and swords, riflebutts and tea cups to gain what little control into no man’s land they could.
Ultimately, while it was a bloody fight, the crusade held long enough for reinforcements to overpower the line and push further, pushing a spearhead into Gufton.
Round 3: The battle of Gufton
Crusaders met the city guard of Gufton, who had spread a thin line to protect the town centre, while elements of the remaining platoon spread into small pockets of infantry fighters to begin pushing the assault.
The main force was lead by the squad's Yawdyl, who valiantly fell in combat, but lived to remain very wounded by the end. The efforts of his group provided enough of a distraction to hamper the Coftyr town guard as other infantry fighters took more ground.
The fate of Gufton
While the King’s loyal gentle-quar fought hard, those dauntless Crusaders who mounted daring raids on the town of Gufton would ultimately declare victory. By a single point!
Master and Quar-mander
Chaedi was the recipient of this award which recognised superior martial and tactical prowess i.e. the player with the most wins. Well done fellow Royalist!
Best in Show
Pieter’s wonderfully explosive Toulmore won the popular vote for best-painted army with personality. They were certainly a sight to behold on the battlefield and we had a blast or two in our match.
A true gentle-quar
Fab was the player who was deemed to demonstrate the most ‘gentle-quarly behaviour’. Well deserved – especially considering his efforts behind the scenes with the tokens, the cards, being generous in-game with explanations and options, quar-lity banter … what a guy!
Is that a tractor on the horizon?
I heard a rumour that the next Quar event may involve vehicles …
More to follow on that I’m sure.

Standing (or sitting) ovation for Juan
A heartfelt thank-you to the event organiser, visionary, dream-weaver, Juan, for the time and energy he has poured into this niche community.
Seriously, that passion for the hobby, curating mission-specific tables complete with terrain, helping n00bs learn how to play, preparing reference documentation – and more – is a testament to his generosity.
But we should not take him for granted. We must protect him at all costs.
Praise!
